Dubai (DXB) layover guide

Use the terminal and concourse on your onward boarding pass. A connection involving Terminal 2 needs its own transfer instructions; do not assume all facilities in Terminal 3 are available to every DXB passenger.

BEFORE YOU SETTLE IN

Choose by terminal and concourse, not just “Dubai airport”. Dubai International Hotel is in Terminal 3; sleepover has locations in T3 A, B and C and T1 D. DXB and DWC are different airports.

THE DXB DETAILS

Build the route from the actual gate area

A DXB connection is not adequately described by the city name. The airport’s interactive map helps you locate the onward concourse and the facilities on that route.

01

Confirm DXB on both flights

Check the airport codes before looking at a lounge. If one flight uses DWC, stop using a DXB airside-transfer plan and follow the airlines’ instructions for the airport change. Include a separate road journey and entry requirements.

02

Identify any terminal transfer

If Terminal 2 is involved, use the airport and airline’s route-specific instructions. Do not extrapolate from a connection entirely within T3. The required transfer and checks determine what part of the terminal you can use.

03

Choose a stop after locating the onward gate area

Open the map, find the departure concourse and then shortlist a nearby rest facility. Recheck the flight display before walking away from the gate area. A change of concourse can alter the usefulness of a preselected hotel or lounge.

The schematic in this guide explains the sequence; the official interactive map is the navigation source for your actual terminal.

Choose the route for your itinerary. Public road directions do not describe restricted airport corridors.

Itinerary-dependent

DXB terminals and concourses

Airline-directed terminal transfer

T3 has A, B and C concourses; T2 needs its own transfer instructions. Confirm the route with the airline or an airport Guest Experience Ambassador. A public map cannot establish that you are allowed through a particular airside route.

Taxi or planned public-transport journey

Dubai Airports instructs passengers changing airports to clear passport control, collect baggage and arrange onward transport. A taxi is the direct option. Check current public-transport connections before choosing them, especially overnight. Do not assume that a temporary free airport shuttle advertised for a past runway closure still operates.

Baggage

Leave bags at the right arrivals desk

Dubai Airports currently lists 24/7 short-term storage in Terminals 1, 2 and 3. In T1, find dnata baggage services on the Arrivals level near Boots and Etisalat. In T3, Emirates Left Luggage is on Arrivals near Exit 1, behind Boots. These arrivals facilities require public-side access; confirm acceptance and charges for your particular bags.

Night transport

The Metro is not an overnight service

The Red Line serves DXB Terminals 1 and 3. Dubai Airports publishes network operating hours of 05:00–midnight Monday–Thursday and Saturday, 05:00–01:00 Friday, and 08:00–midnight Sunday. These are not the last departures from your airport platform. Check RTA journey planning for your station, direction and date, and budget for a taxi when trains are unavailable.

01

Your DXB connection route

Use the terminal and concourse on your onward boarding pass. A connection involving Terminal 2 needs its own transfer instructions; do not assume all facilities in Terminal 3 are available to every DXB passenger.

02

Calculate time you can actually use

Subtract arrival procedures, all transfers, security and the airline’s boarding deadline from the gap between flights. Use our planner to make those assumptions explicit. It estimates a time budget; it does not validate the airline’s minimum connection time.

03

Can you explore Dubai?

Before going into Dubai, confirm entry permission, bag arrangements and the transport service for the time of day. An overnight layover does not guarantee public transport is running.

04

Separate tickets: resolve the baggage question

Dubai World Central (DWC) is not another terminal at DXB. A change of airport requires landside transport and appropriate entry permission. Ask both airlines whether baggage is checked through. If it is not, include reclaim, entry, bag drop and security. Confirm the second airline’s check-in cutoff before making any optional plans.
