Airside or landside? It makes a difference

The small detail that matters when booking a hotel, lounge or shower.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Airside is the restricted airport area after security; landside is the public area. “Inside the airport” does not tell you which side a hotel or lounge is on. International transit access also depends on your boarding pass, terminal and itinerary.

The practical decision checklist

Use this framework with your airline’s and airport’s instructions for the actual itinerary.

Booking descriptionWhat it actually tells youWhat to verify
Airside / transit hotelInside a restricted passenger areaAccepted flights, terminal/hall, onward pass and baggage conditions.
Landside / arrivals hotelIn the public part of the airportEntry permission and the return route through security.
Terminal-connected hotelWalkway or direct link to a terminalWhether the route crosses immigration; “connected” does not mean airside.
Airport-area hotelNear the airport, usually with road accessShuttle schedule, fees, pickup location and return departure time.

Before you leave home

  • Send the operator your arrival and departure terminal before paying.
  • Ask whether the route requires immigration, security or a shuttle.
  • Confirm whether checked baggage must remain checked through.
  • Recheck access when the airline changes your flight or terminal.

Airside: beyond security

Airside facilities are in the restricted part of an airport. Access depends on your boarding pass, terminal and route. International transit areas may have additional restrictions.

Landside: the public area

Landside facilities are outside the restricted departure area. Reaching them from an international connection may require immigration clearance and permission to enter the country.

Check before booking

Ask the operator for precise arrival instructions. Confirm your terminal, whether you need to collect baggage, and whether you can return through security in time.

Put the advice into your own itinerary

Start with an airport-specific guide, then build a time budget. For a real example of route-specific instructions and separate-ticket guidance, see Heathrow’s official connection information.
